Vision
Montessori Schoolhouse High School offers an alternative to traditional education, guiding students through their adolescent years with purpose and independence. Rooted in Montessori principles and real-world agricultural learning, our program emphasizes self-direction, personal growth, and practical life skills.
Students engage in meaningful, project-based work — from environmental studies and sustainable farming initiatives to entrepreneurship and leadership development. Individualized Education
Each student works with a mentor (Montessori guide) to develop an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) based on their academic goals, personal interests, and career aspirations. This allows students to focus on core subjects while pursuing deep explorations into areas like the arts, sciences, technology, and social justice. Students progress at their own pace, with opportunities to advance in certain subjects or receive additional support where needed.
Integrated Curriculum
Interdisciplinary Learning: Subjects are interconnected to promote deep understanding. For example, a unit on climate change would combine elements of biology, geography, politics, and economics. Humanities and Sciences: Core academic areas include Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities (History, Literature, Social Studies), and Foreign Languages, with projects integrating real-world applications of these subjects. Electives and Passion Projects: Students are encouraged to explore interests through electives such as digital media, robotics, environmental science, creative writing, and entrepreneurship. Each semester, students complete a "Passion Project," which could range from starting a small business to organizing a community event.
Experiential Learning
Internships and Apprenticeships: Students participate in internships with local businesses, non-profits, or professionals in fields related to their interests. This real-world exposure helps them apply academic knowledge to practical experiences.Field Studies and Travel Opportunities: Monthly field studies allow students to engage with the community and environment through hands-on learning experiences, from environmental conservation projects to city planning. The program also includes travel opportunities, such as cultural immersion trips or international service projects.
Independent Research
Yearly Capstone Projects: Each student completes a capstone project in their final year, which showcases their research, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Projects can be based on personal interests or community needs and may involve elements of scientific research, social activism, or entrepreneurial ventures. Presentation and Defense: Students present and defend their capstone projects to a panel of peers, teachers, and community experts, demonstrating mastery of their topic.
